A Kansas City police spokesman said Johnson's girlfriend saw him with another woman at a Kansas City bar. An argument ensued, during which Johnson allegedly shoved his girlfriend to the ground. The girlfriend filed a police report Sunday, the same day Johnson ran for 110 yards and two touchdowns in KC's 27-7 win over the Jets. Johnson turned himself into police, posted bond and was released on Monday night. It's the second time in less than two years that a girlfriend has brough assault charges against Johnson, who is due in court on September 20th. His plea agreement for that first charge required him to stay out of trouble for two years. He now could face up to six months in jail. Johnson denies the incident took place. Regardless, he becomes the fifth Chief to run afoul of the law since the start of training camp. Chiefs coach thingy Vermeil says the incident will not affect Johnson's status with the team for Sunday's trip to Oakland.

Posted on Thu, Sep. 15, 2005 CHIEFS NOTEBOOK: Johnson makes brief statement
The Kansas City Star
Saying he didn’t want to earn a reputation as a man who beats women, Chiefs running back Larry Johnson issued a statement Wednesday regarding the recent complaint that he assaulted a woman at a Kansas City bar.
Johnson spoke for almost two minutes but did not address specifics of the complaint and would not answer questions when he was finished.
“I don’t want to be named as a woman-beater,” Johnson said. “That is not my M.O. That is not how I was raised.
“It was an unfortunate event that happened to me Friday night.”
According to the police report, the alleged victim told police she and Johnson argued at a Plaza-area bar early Saturday morning. Johnson then allegedly grabbed and shoved her, police said.
Johnson said he was sorry for the alleged victim. He didn’t apologize for the incident, but because some of her personal information was broadcast on a Kansas City television station.
“I really reach out to her and her family because this is something she can’t live down,” Johnson said. “I can live this down because I’m a little bit stronger and a little more headstrong about the situation.
“I should have known better as far as me being a target. I know I won’t miss any games, and nothing else will come of this.”
Reached by phone Wednesday evening, Johnson’s attorney, Kevin Regan, said: “My investigative team has investigated this matter from both sides and third parties, and I am 100 percent convinced of Larry’s innocence.
“We look forward to proving Larry’s innocence beyond all doubt at the next court date and are confident justice will be served and a not-guilty verdict will be reached.
“Recent media accounts are inaccurate, incomplete and wrong as to what really happened at the establishment that evening, and we can’t wait to let the actual facts come to light. … We are furnishing the prosecutors the fruits of our investigation.”
“I hope there is no rush to judgment in this case by those responsible for Larry’s fate and look for fairness from all such people as the true events of this incident are brought to light.”
Johnson entered into a diversion program in Johnson County in February 2004 after he was accused by Leawood police of slapping a woman and threatening her with a gun.
