KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- The Chiefs practiced Friday without Lional Dalton, a starting defensive tackle who was arrested early Friday morning at his Johnson County home on misdemeanor charges of domestic battery.
Johnson County district attorney Paul Morrison said Dalton, one of the Chiefs' most amiable players, is accused of grabbing his estranged wife by the hair and pulling her down while she was visiting Dalton for the Thanksgiving holiday. Dalton was released from jail later Friday morning after posting a $2,500 bond.
Coach thingy Vermeil declined comment Friday when asked if Dalton's arrest would affect his playing status for Sunday's noon home game with New England.
"I've only heard bits and pieces," Vermeil said after practice. "I think he will be (available), but some of you (reporters) have more (information) than I do."
The Chiefs first-team defense worked Friday with a four-man defensive tackle rotation of John Browning, Jimmy Wilkerson, Junior Siavii and Ryan Sims, who has been out since the season opener with a major foot injury.
But even though Sims took snaps with the first unit Thursday and Friday, Vermeil said Sims likely wouldn't return to live action until next week's game with Denver at Arrowhead.
Starting cornerback Patrick Surtain, who left Houston on crutches last week after spraining his ankle, was taking what appeared to be a full load of practice repetitions Friday. But Surtain went to the sideline and remained there after a 7-on-7 drill in which Surtain said he tweaked his sore ankle.
Veteran Dewayne Washington played at left corner when Surtain didn't.
"It's not too good, but it's nothing I can't handle," Surtain said of his sore ankle. "I'm better, but I'm probably questionable. If I'm able to play, I'll play."
Surtain has faced the Patriots twice a year during his seven seasons with Miami in the AFC East. In the last four seasons he's faced New England quarterback Tom Brady, who he has intercepted twice.
"I think there's a good chance he'll play," Vermeil said. "He's on the positive side of questionable."
Left tackle Willie Roaf took a full turn in Friday's practice and will start Sunday after missing the previous three games, and six of 10 in total, with a hamstring injury.
In their second roster move of the week, the Chiefs put reserve linebacker Kris Griffin on injured reserve to open a roster spot for veteran Shawn Barber, a 2004 starter until his mid-season knee injury kept him out of action for a full year.
Barber, whose right side linebacker job has since been taken by Kendrell Bell, will play primarily on special teams, as will newly activated cornerback Alphonso Hodge, a promoted practice squad player.
