Last update: March 8, 2005 at 10:56 AM Vikings get chance to court cornerback Smoot today Mark Craig and Kevin Seifert, Star Tribune March 8, 2005 VNOT0308 After watching some of the best players in free agency swap teams Monday, the Vikings will try to jump into the mix today when Fred Smoot, the best cornerback still available, visits Winter Park.
Smoot, who will turn 26 on April 17, has 16 interceptions in four seasons with the Washington Redskins, including three last season. He rejected a recent contract offer from the Redskins that includes a $10 million bonus.
The Vikings are an NFL-high $31 million under the cap and looking to add another top-level player to a secondary that includes cornerback Antoine Winfield, whom the Vikings grabbed in free agency last season for $34.8 million, including a $10.8 million roster bonus.
The Vikings also will entertain free-agent tight end Freddie Jones today. Jones, who caught 45 passes for 426 yards and two touchdowns for the Arizona Cardinals last season, visited Green Bay on Monday.
The Vikings also are trying to schedule a visit this week with free-agent tight end Itula Mili, who played for Seattle last season.
The Vikings also are still discussing a trade with Washington for receiver Rod Gardner.
Mark Craig is at mcraig@startribune.com.

I'm sure they will offer him much more than Carl will. They did last year when they signed Antoine Winfield who I wanted very badly, of course he was a stud for them last season. I'm sure they will get smoot and he will be the same.

From the Minnesota Star Tribune: The Vikings today signed free agent cornerback Fred Smoot to a six-year deal worth about $30 million, including a signing bonus of about $10 million. Smoot will start at right cornerback opposite left cornerback Antoine Winfield, the team's prized free-agent signing a year ago.

Well that leaves Law and Surtain so let's see what excuses Carl has now. He says he is a bargain shopper, well he waited till all the baragin DB's are gone now he has to fork over the big money(which he will say we cannot afford). So I guess Bell is our offseason move.
