Packers to look at LB Beisel

The Green Bay Packers are bringing in linebacker Monty Beisel of Kansas City for a free-agent visit next week as a likely backup.
Beisel, who turns 27 in August, started nine of the 11 games he played for the Chiefs last season, with six of those starts coming at middle linebacker.
Beisel, a fifth-year pro, visited the Pittsburgh Steelers on Wednesday and will visit the New England Patriots on Monday. He’ll travel to Green Bay on Tuesday and visit the team’s facilities Wednesday.
The Packers return starters Nick Barnett at middle linebacker and Na’il Diggs at weak-side linebacker, though new defensive coordinator Jim Bates has said he’s open to moving one or both of them, depending on who’s the third starter. The Packers probably will use a high draft pick on a linebacker also.
“I think they’re looking at (Beisel) as a guy that can compete for one of the starting spots,” said Craig Domann, Beisel’s agent. “I don’t think they’ve made concrete conditions on who’s going to be where anyway. There’s a possibility they could move some guys around so they’ve got their best three guys on the field at their best positions. How Monty could figure into that is only a guess.”
Hannibal Navies, the Packers’ starter at strong-side linebacker the last two seasons, remains unsigned as an unrestricted free agent. The only other linebackers from last season on the roster are Paris Lenon and Steve Josue.
Beisel, 6-foot-3 and 238 pounds, had calf and groin injuries that sidelined him for five games last year. The former fourth-round draft pick of the Chiefs had no career starts in his first three seasons in the NFL.
Domann said he doesn’t expect Beisel to receive any contract offers until he finishes his three visits. The Chiefs also are trying to re-sign Beisel.
