Report: Browns TE Winslow has torn ACL CLEVELAND - It appears that Kellen Winslow II will not play for the Cleveland Browns in 2005.
Advertisment
The Cleveland Plain Dealer reported on Thursday that the second-year tight end will need reconstructive surgery to repair a torn ACL in his right knee.
Winslow injured his right knee and suffered undisclosed internal injuries as well in a motorcycle accident on May 1. He was released from the hospital on May 10.
Severe swelling in the knee prevented doctors from doing a thorough examination until 16 days after the accident.
According to the newspaper, an MRI taken Tuesday revealed that Winslow had a torn ACL. Players usually need 10-12 months to recover from surgery for a torn ACL.
Since the injuries were not football-related, the Browns are not obligated to disclose the extent of Winslow's injuries until he fails a physical.
The sixth overall pick in the 2004 draft, Winslow was limited to just two games in his rookie season after breaking his right leg in Week Two. He had two leg operations but was expected to be ready for training camp in July.
Winslow signed a six-year, $40 million contract with the Browns but lost a $5.3 million bonus due to the leg injury. He had five receptions for 50 yards.
