Without a healthy Priest Holmes, the Chiefs are in trouble.
Missouri is home to the two offenses that rely most heavily on their star running backs -- the Rams with Marshall Faulk and the Chiefs with Holmes. The Rams, however, have receivers who can challenge a defense if Faulk is out, and the Chiefs don't.
For insurance, the Chiefs drafted running back Larry Johnson in the first round. Johnson has the skills to develop into a top-shelf NFL running back, but he lacks the burst and big-play potential of Holmes. Johnson also is not as fluid as Holmes is as a receiver, which limits the passing game in coordinator Al Saunders' offense.
According to reports, Holmes, who has an injured hip, expects to be ready by training camp. If he can't stay healthy or has lost a step, the Chiefs will be a disappointment.
