CHIEFS RELEASE VETERAN S JEROME WOODS
May 18, 2006, 8:13:37 AM
Kansas City Chiefs President Carl Peterson announced on Thursday that the club had terminated the contract of veteran S Jerome Woods.
Woods (6-3, 205) played in 128 games (105 starts) in 10 seasons with the Chiefs since joining the club as its first-round pick (28th overall) in the ‘96 NFL Draft. He produced 720 tackles (487 solo), 5.0 sacks (-27.0 yards), 15 interceptions for 282 yards with two touchdowns, 49 passes defensed, 29 QB pressures, four fumble recoveries and 11 forced fumbles. He added 27 special teams stops and 25 kickoff returns for 581 yards (23.2 avg.). His 720 career tackles with the Chiefs rank seventh in team history.
“It is always difficult to say goodbye to good football players and very fine people,” Peterson commented. “Jerome Woods certainly fits into both of those categories. He was our number one draft choice in ‘96 and went on to serve as a starter for us for seven seasons. Jerome was a consummate professional both on and off the field. While injuries certainly curtailed his contributions in recent years, he earned a Pro Bowl berth following the 2003 season after missing all of 2002. We wish Jerome Woods and his family the very best in the future and we thank him for his contributions to the Kansas City Chiefs organization. As everyone knows, we drafted two young safeties this year, Bernard Pollard and Jarrod Page, who will give us added depth behind our starters Sammy Knight and Greg Wesley.”
The Memphis, Tennessee native made a remarkable comeback in 2003 to earn his initial Pro Bowl nod after missing the entire 2002 campaign with a broken right leg. Woods started all 16 games in 2003, recording 99 tackles (68 solo), three interceptions for 125 yards with two touchdowns, nine passes defensed, one fumble recovery and three forced fumbles. He played in seven games in 2005, registering three tackles and three special teams stops. Woods enjoyed four triple-digit tackle campaigns with the Chiefs, including a career-high 132 tackles in his first year as a starter in ‘97. He also registered a career-best four interceptions that season as the Kansas City defense led the NFL in scoring defense by allowing just 14.5 points per game.
Woods tallied 219 tackles (125 solo), 10.0 tackles for loss, seven interceptions, 17 passes defensed, three fumble recoveries and three forced fumbles with a TD in two seasons at Memphis. He began his collegiate career at Northeast Mississippi Community College in Booneville, Mississippi. The former prep defensive back and wide receiver caught 20 passes for 584 yards with eight TDs as a senior at Melrose High School in Memphis, Tennessee.
