Skolnick Staff Writer Posted July 5 2003 David Bowens, an energetic pass-rushing end expected to be part of the defensive line rotation, tore an anterior cruciate ligament earlier this week and likely is lost to the Dolphins until at least November. Harold Lewis, Bowens' agent, said Friday that his client injured his knee Monday when he jumped off a ladder and came down awkwardly after changing a light bulb in his house. Bowens did not return calls. Bowens, who turned 26 on Thursday, still could return this season, because the tear was clean -- he did not damage any cartilage. Even so, it will cost him in a number of ways. After re-signing as a free agent, he had the chance to earn as much as $1 million in incentives this season. And he said recently that he felt completely healthy, after a series of injuries slowed him in 2002, and was eager to reward the team for sticking by him last season. Bowens' injury affects the rest of the line. He was expected to be one of the team's top nine, even after recording only 1.5 sacks last season. This could create a chance for one of the players coming to the team from the NFL Europe, Lamanzer Williams or Corey Callens, who signed a two-year contract with the team Tuesday. It also could provide more leverage for Adewale Ogunleye, who had 9.5 sacks in his first season as a starter. Ogunleye, an exclusive rights player, has sought a long-term deal rather than playing for the one-year, $375,000 tender the team has offered.
