Kansas City Agrees to Terms with CB Julian Battle and S Willie Pile

MAY 12 (afternoon)--Kansas City Chiefs President Carl Peterson announced on Monday that the Chiefs have agreed to terms with 2003 draft choices CB Julian Battle and S Willie Pile. Battle and Pile join number one overall pick, QB Carson Palmer of the Cincinnati Bengals as the only three 2003 NFL Draftees to currently be under contract. Battle, the Chiefs third-round selection (92nd overall) in the 2003 NFL Draft, agreed to terms of a four-year contract. Pile was selected as the first of the club’s two picks in the seventh round (252nd overall) and agreed to terms of a three-year contract. As per Chiefs policy, no further terms of the agreement were disclosed.
Battle (6-2, 205) joins Kansas City after concluding a productive college career at Tennessee. He owns experience at both safety and cornerback, but is expected to play cornerback for the Chiefs. He started all 26 games for the Volunteers, producing 132 tackles (100 solo), 2.0 sacks (-22.0 yards), three interceptions, 13 passes defensed, three fumble recoveries and three forced fumbles. He also returned a fumble 81 yards for a touchdown and blocked two punts.
The West Palm Beach, Florida native began his career at Los Angeles Valley College as a wide receiver before switching to safety his sophomore campaign. Battle rushed for 900 yards and 12 touchdowns as a senior at Wellington High School in West Palm Beach, Florida. He also lettered in basketball and track.
Pile (6-2, 206) comes to Kansas City after a four-year career at Virginia Tech where he played in 39 games (36 starts). He recorded 267 tackles (160 solo), a sack (-0.0 yards), 14 interceptions for 276 yards with two touchdowns, 21 passes defensed, five fumble recoveries and three forced fumbles. He ranks third in school annals with 14 INTs, while his 276 career interception return yards rank second in Hokies history.
Pile was a three-year letterman as a quarterback, wide receiver and defensive back at West Potomac High School in Alexandria, Virginia. The New York, New York native rushed for 652 yards and threw for 560 yards as a senior to earn first-team Group AAA All-Virginia by the Associated Press. He added nine rushing scores, four TD passes, 96 tackles and a school single-season record eight interceptions
