HALIFAX - Steve Morley’s pro football career has gone south, and that’s a good thing.
The six-foot-seven, 340-pound offensive lineman from Halifax has agreed in principle on a three-year contract with the NFL’s Kansas City Chiefs. The deal is contingent on Morley making the team. Financial terms were not disclosed.
All that remains is to secure a visa, which would allow him to work in the U.S. Chiefs rookies began off-field meetings with coaches Tuesday. A minicamp for rookies and veterans will be held May 28 to 30. The main training camp is slated to start July 19 at the University of Wisconsin-River Falls.
The Calgary Stampeders selected the 21-year-old left tackle first overall in the Canadian Football League draft April 30.
“Right now, I think we’d explore all NFL options before we’d look to the CFL,” said Craig Domann, Morley’s Colorado Springs-based agent.
“This is an opportunity for him to compete with the best and see what he can do. If he makes a lot of progress and develops the way he’s capable of, he’ll be on an NFL roster.”
If things don’t work out in Kansas City, at least half-a-dozen other NFL clubs have expressed interest in Morley, a two-time Vanier Cup champion as a member of the Saint Mary’s Huskies. The Chiefs were among the first to court him, and flew Morley into Kansas City for a minicamp earlier this month.
“The real question going in was would an NFL team recognize his abilities and have the foresight to take this young man and develop him, and Kansas City was willing to do that,” said Domann. “Steve has things you can’t teach, and things that can be improved upon that can be taught, and I think that’s why he’s such an attractive candidate.”
Morley could not be reached for comment.
Elsewhere, the CFL’s Montreal Alouettes have signed all four of their Atlantic Universities Football Conference draft choices in 2003. Receiver-kicker Dave Stala and offensive lineman Paul Archer of the Huskies, defensive back Richard KariKari of the St. Francis Xavier X-Men, and Acadia Axemen receiver Andrew Noel all agreed to two-year deals plus an option, should they make the team.
