Chiefs to work out Cade McNown :6:
From the Star....
When San Francisco released former UCLA quarterback Cade McNown last week, his name came up with the Chiefs. McNown, who has had his share of rough times in the NFL, was the 12th overall pick in 1999 by Chicago.
The Chiefs liked McNown going into that draft -- one that included quarterbacks Donovan McNabb, Akili Smith, Tim Couch and Daunte Culpepper -- and it doesn't hurt that team president/general manager Carl Peterson and head coach thingy Vermeil have UCLA roots.
However, McNown has experienced problems with his throwing (left) shoulder since his final season with the Bears in 2000 and did not try a pass with Miami in 2001 or San Francisco last season.
McNown, 26, underwent surgery to repair the nerve endings in the shoulder and hopes to start throwing again later this summer.
"He wants to continue his career," said McNown's agent, Tom Condon. "It's just that he wants to get back throwing the way he used to. "
If McNown regains health, it might not be a bad idea for the Chiefs to check him out. McNown earned the veteran's minimum with the 49ers last season -- $530,000 -- and is hungry to get his career going again. Besides, how often does a team get to land a former first-round pick for next to nothing?
"I loved the guy coming out of UCLA," Peterson said. "He was marvelous that season with some of the comebacks he pulled off. We'll probably bring him in and work him out...It might be the kind of situation we had with Rich Gannon, where he takes a year off and successfully resumes his career."
