CHIEFS SMITH & SCANLON NAMED NFL EUROPE LEAGUE PLAYERS OF WEEK 6

Running backs JARRETT PAYTON of the Tennessee Titans and JONATHAN SMITH of the Kansas City Chiefs, linebacker RICH SCANLON of the Chiefs and defensive back ALLAN AMUNDSON of the San Francisco 49ers are the NFL Europe League Co-Offensive, Defensive and Special Teams Players of the Week for games played the sixth week of the season (May 7-8), the league announced today.
In Amsterdam’s 48-10 victory over Frankfurt, the rushing tandem of Payton and Smith combined for 228 yards on 28 carries (an 8.1-yard average) and two touchdowns. For the game, the Admirals rushed for 334 yards on 46 attempts, breaking the league record of 331 yards set by the Frankfurt Galaxy against the Barcelona Dragons on April 20, 2002.
Payton gained 97 yards on nine carries, scoring on runs of 27 and 18 yards, and currently ranks third in NFL Europe with 410 rushing yards. He leads the league with a 6.6 yards-per-carry-average and his five rushing touchdowns tie for the most in NFL Europe.
Smith, who leads the league with 486 rushing yards on 87 carries, led the Admirals with 131 yards on 19 carries, including a 49-yard run.
Chiefs linebacker Scanlon recorded a game-high nine tackles and 2.0 sacks for losses of 13 yards during Berlin’s 23-17 defeat to Cologne.
The Syracuse graduate has led Berlin in tackles every game this season and leads the league with 56 tackles.
Praising his star linebacker, Thunder head coach RICK LANTZ said: “I think he could be playing on Sundays in the future.”
Amundson returned a kickoff 71 yards to set up a third quarter touchdown for Hamburg in its 24-19 loss to Rhein.
The 49ers’ defensive back currently ranks third in the league with a 24.1-yard kickoff-return average.
French running back SANTONIO OCTOBRE of Amsterdam was named National Player of the Week when he gained an all-time national player record 94 rushing yards on 13 carries, including a run of 38 yards.
