Chiefs report: Notes, quotes, anecdotes
June 9, 2003
Inside slant | Strategy and personnel
--As he concluded the final OTA workout before training camp, Vermeil acknowledged that the Chiefs might well keep six receivers, as opposed to five, on their 53-man roster.
Four spots are penned in for Eddie Kennison and Johnnie Morton (starters), and Marc Boerigter and Pro Bowl returner Dante Hall. Injury-plagued young vets Snoop Minnis and Sylvester Morris will likely fight for one spot, as the club surely can't keep both (if either). Both appeared fully recovered from '02 injuries, and Morris is catching the ball as consistently as ever. He remains, however, the kind of long strider who is not a classic fit in Al Saunders' quick-twitch offense.
The Chiefs have a new addition in special teams standout Dameane Douglas, who may command a spot, and several young receivers like n there are the young players like LaShaun Ward who'se been impressive since joining the team as an undrafted free agent.
--MVP running back Priest Holmes began some light running this recently and remains on schedule to be running at full speed by the opening of training camp July 19, Vermeil reported.
"Physically, he could run full speed right now, but that's not the smartest thing for him to do," Vermeil said.
Holmes, who has been slow to recover from a Dec. 14 hip injury and subsequent arthroscopic surgery, still must be heard from regarding his request for a new contract after developing into the NFL's most productive back of the past two seasons. The Chiefs continue to say they want to see Holmes running well in pads before they consider an extension of his current contract, which still has three seasons remaining.
QUOTE TO NOTE
"The only thing I've learned about this league, especially with free agency, is that there's a window of opportunity. When that window's open you better do well because, all of a sudden, you've got four or five free agents and you might get only one of them back. Then that window closes and it takes another three or four years after that point." -- thingy Vermeil, saying the window is open for his Chiefs this season.
