The Chiefs made a $3 million saving against the cap with the June 1 release of veteran cornerback Ray Crockett. They also have penciled in another $1 million more into the '03 budget for the anticipated retirement of veteran Middle linebacker Marvcus Patton.
"Ray was here at the end of his career and made a contribution and gave us some leadership," Vermeil said. "But if you keep a Ray Crockett, then all of a sudden a Julian Battle (KC's third-round draft pick this year) doesn't get an opportunity. I think (Crockett) served his purpose and he got a couple of (extra) years under his belt and now it's time."
